Chronic Disease Management

Disease management is an approach to healthcare that teaches patients how to manage a chronic disease. Patients learn to take responsibility for understanding how to take care of themselves. They learn to avoid potential problems and exacerbation, or worsening, of their health problem.

Example: One step in teaching disease management to a diabetes patient is to show them how to keep their blood sugar levels within a healthy range.

48% of professional drivers have a chronic condition (diabetes, hypertension, obesity) that restricts their Commercial Driver’s License to 1 year or less. Due to the lack of convenient medical care on the road where drivers work, and the high costs of health insurance and medical care, many drivers do not treat their chronic conditions as needed, not only impacting their ability to drive, but also costing the trucking industry billions of dollars annually in lost productivity.

With COVID-19 affecting the trucking community, timing is also critical. Drivers with chronic conditions are not only more susceptible to the coronavirus, but also experience more serious complications. Per the CDC, individuals with one or more chronic conditions represented 78% of all individuals requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 71% of those requiring hospitalization.  Drivers need their chronic conditions better managed to lessen the effects of COVID-19, if they are afflicted with the virus.
